Professional basketball player Jay Henderson is using his platform, skills, and experience to give back in a big way. His nonprofit, Flow Shooting Academy, is changing the game for underprivileged children who dream of playing basketball but often miss out due to financial barriers.
Unlike many traditional summer basketball camps that come with hefty price tags, Flow Shooting Academy is completely free of charge—a rarity in the sports world. “Let me start something totally different where kids can come and it’s free of charge,” says Henderson, explaining the vision behind the academy.
A Personal Mission Turned Movement
Basketball has been a part of Jay’s life since childhood, and it ultimately led him to a professional career. But along the way, he recognized a troubling reality—many kids never even get the chance to try. Expensive camps and training programs often shut out those from lower-income backgrounds, leaving them without opportunities to develop their skills or be part of a team.
“Why is it like that?” he asked himself. Even when professional players run their own camps, the high costs remain, excluding a large number of children. Instead of accepting the status quo, he set out to change it. In 2022, Flow Shooting Academy was born with a mission to bring elite basketball training to kids who need it most—without the financial burden.
Starting in Orlando, the camp quickly expanded to Miami, and now, in 2025, they are bringing the program to Boston. The momentum has been incredible, and the impact is undeniable.
More Than Just a Game
As a professional shooting guard, Jay’s expertise lies in shooting the ball—a skill that often gets overlooked in youth basketball training. “Most trainers shy away from this and focus on ball handling,” he explains. Flow Shooting Academy specializes in teaching kids how to really shoot the ball, giving them a critical edge in their game.
But the camp isn’t just about basketball. Jay is preparing kids for life beyond the court. The academy brings in nutritionists, health coaches, tech professionals, and other guest speakers to expose kids to different career paths and life skills. Whether it’s learning about healthy eating, technology, or personal development, the program ensures these young athletes grow as well-rounded individuals.
A Growing Legacy
The academy has been gaining major recognition, including coverage from TMZ Sports, and it continues to attract top-tier sponsors who believe in the mission. Walmart provides back-to-school supplies, camp t-shirts, and backpacks. Flow Water keeps the kids hydrated. Rock ‘Em Socks, which partners with Marvel, NFL, NBA, and Disney, supplies socks for the players. FX Design Group ensures the camp has professional marketing materials, including banners, flyers, and a step & repeat for events. The company Payblox provides them with camp tshirts, backpacks and lunch for all the camps as well.
The community and sponsors are rallying behind Flow Shooting Academy, and with each passing year, its reach continues to grow.
