As the spotlight of New York Fashion Week approached, Ralph Lauren made a historic announcement: James Jeter has become the first Black Creative Director of Design & Brand Direction for Men’s Polo. Jeter’s journey with the iconic brand began at just 16 years old, when he worked at the Rugby store in Georgetown. Over the years, he steadily climbed the ranks from intern to design associate, showcasing his passion and talent at every step.
In March 2022, James launched a groundbreaking capsule collection, which was deeply influenced by the social justice movements of 2020, including the tragic deaths of Black men and women and the rise of the Black Lives Matter protests. During an internal discussion about racial reconciliation, James raised a pivotal question to Ralph Lauren himself: “Was the company going to remain all-white?”
As a 2013 graduate of Morehouse College, Jeter took his experiences and pride in historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) into his work. He became the lead designer of the Morehouse and Spelman Colleges Collection by Polo Ralph Lauren. The collection drew inspiration from yearbooks of the 1920s to 1950s, focusing on the unique history and culture of these schools. The line not only celebrated the fashion at HBCUs but also challenged the brand’s Ivy League, traditionally white aesthetic by showcasing an all-Black cast.

“I began creating these visual presentations and had conversations with Ralph around ideas that I thought could expand the narrative … how [the company] has shaped collegiate style,” Jeter shared with BoF.
With James Jeter’s vision and leadership, we look forward to seeing his continued influence in shaping Polo Ralph Lauren’s future.
