Sophie Nyweide, a former child actress known for her roles in films such as Mammoth (2009) and Noah, passed away on April 14, 2025, at the age of 24. Her family announced her death in a public notice, attributing it to self-medication as a result of unresolved trauma and emotional pain.
A Promising Start in Film
Born in Vermont, Nyweide discovered her passion for acting at the age of four after watching the film Something’s Gotta Give at the theater once owned by her mother, former actress Shelly Gibson. She began acting at age six, debuting in the 2006 film Bella, and went on to appear in several notable films including Margot at the Wedding, where she acted alongside Nicole Kidman, and An Invisible Sign with Jessica Alba. Her television work included an episode of Law & Order and a 2015 appearance on What Would You Do?, marking her final screen appearance.
A Life Remembered
In their obituary, Nyweide’s family described her as a “kind and trusting girl,” noting that her openness sometimes left her vulnerable. They highlighted her talents beyond acting, mentioning her voracious writing and drawing, which often reflected the depth of her experiences and the pain she endured. Despite the support from therapists, law enforcement officers, and loved ones, her internal battles ultimately led to her untimely death.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) in her memory.
Sophie Nyweide’s legacy as a talented actress and creative spirit will be remembered by those who knew her and by audiences who appreciated her work on screen.
