Travis Kelce is on a mission to cut back on sweets, and he’s found that deceiving himself is the most effective strategy to stay on track.
During the Wednesday, Oct. 2 episode of the New Heights podcast, the 34-year-old Kansas City Chiefs tight end chatted with his brother Jason Kelce about resisting a box of donuts that had been sent their way.
“The yellow boxes are dangerous,” Travis admitted, emphasizing his need to maintain his diet and stay in shape for the NFL season.
“I’m at that point in the season where I’m like, let me just push it away,” he continued. “I see that golden glazed donut just sitting in the yellow box. I’m just like, ‘I don’t need that today. I’ll get it tomorrow,’ knowing that they don’t have boxes of donuts in the building every day.”
“[I] just lie to myself so that I don’t just grab 10 donuts and run around the corner and just stuff my face like a little fat kid,” Travis quipped, eliciting laughter from his brother.
Jason, 36, chimed in, reflecting on the bittersweet reality of an NFL career: “It’s a sad day when you reach the point in your NFL career where you can’t eat whatever you want anymore.” The retired Philadelphia Eagles center shared that he used to indulge in ice cream the night before games, but his body eventually couldn’t handle it. “Then I got to year 12 and I ate some ice cream and I tried to play football the next day and I’m like, ‘Oh s–. this is real,” Jason recalled, to which Travis laughed and joked, “Why am I so lethargic today? I just feel like a big blob. Yeah. Am I bloated?”
Last year, the brothers reminisced about their childhood diets, poking fun at their father, Ed Kelce, who insisted that growing children need “protein with every meal, a carb with every meal, and fruits and vegetables.” They found their dad’s advice amusing, given their less-than-balanced upbringing.
“We never got vegetables growing up,” Travis asserted on their podcast. “I never ate a single vegetable growing up.”
In defense, their father claimed both boys ate “green beans and corn” as kids, but Jason sided with Travis, who concluded, “We ate Giorgio’s Oven Fresh Pizza every single night.”
